Why asbestos matters in Kamloops homes

Asbestos was used for fire protection and insulation in thousands of building materials. WorkSafeBC says it was widely used in B.C. until the early 1990s, and that if your home was built before 1990, it's likely that at least some parts of it contain asbestos. If you own an older Kamloops home, that may well include yours.

Asbestos-containing materials that are in good condition and left alone are generally not the problem. The risk comes when they're damaged or disturbed, for example when they're sanded, drilled, cut or torn out during a renovation. That releases fibres that can be breathed in, and long-term exposure is linked to serious diseases including asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma. These illnesses can take years to appear.

Common places asbestos turns up in older homes include:

  • Textured or "popcorn" ceilings and stippled walls
  • Drywall joint compound ("drywall mud") and patching compound
  • Vinyl floor tiles, sheet flooring and flooring adhesive
  • Vermiculite attic insulation
  • Insulation on hot water pipes, boilers and furnace ducts
  • Stucco, roofing felt and shingles, and window putty

Never disturb suspected asbestos yourself. Don't sand, scrape, drill, cut or remove material you think might contain asbestos. Leave it alone, keep people and pets away from damaged material, and have it tested by a qualified professional.

Licensed contractors only

Since January 1, 2024, companies that do asbestos abatement work in B.C. must be licensed by WorkSafeBC, and the workers doing the work must hold asbestos certificates. Property owners also have a duty to make sure their abatement contractor holds a valid licence before allowing the work to start.

That's why we only pass requests to contractors with a valid WorkSafeBC Asbestos Abatement Licence. You can confirm any contractor's licence yourself in WorkSafeBC's Asbestos Abatement Licence Registry.

Frequently asked questions

Do you remove asbestos yourselves?
No. Kamloops Asbestos Removal is an independent referral service, not an asbestos abatement contractor. We connect you with independent, WorkSafeBC-licensed asbestos specialists who serve Kamloops. Your quote, contract and any warranty are with the contractor who does the work.
Does my home have asbestos?
You can't tell by looking. WorkSafeBC says that if your home was built before 1990, it's likely that at least some parts contain asbestos, and newer homes can contain it too if older materials were used. The only way to know is to have samples collected by a qualified person and tested by a lab.
Do I need an asbestos test before I renovate?
In most cases, yes. B.C.'s Occupational Health and Safety Regulation (section 20.112) requires a qualified person to inspect a building for hazardous materials, including asbestos, before renovation or demolition work begins. WorkSafeBC advises homeowners to have their home tested before any renovation, demolition or maintenance work that could disturb asbestos.
How do I know an asbestos contractor is licensed?
Since January 1, 2024, asbestos abatement contractors in B.C. must hold a WorkSafeBC Asbestos Abatement Licence. Licences are valid for one year, and you can check a contractor's status in WorkSafeBC's online Asbestos Abatement Licence Registry. We only connect customers with contractors who hold a valid licence.
Can I remove asbestos myself?
We strongly recommend against it. WorkSafeBC's guidance is that if you suspect asbestos is present, you shouldn't touch or move it, and only qualified professionals should remove it. Disturbing it can release fibres into the air in your home.
How much does asbestos removal cost?
It depends on the material, how much of it there is, where it is and how the work area has to be set up, so there's no reliable flat price. A licensed contractor will give you a quote after reviewing your test results or assessing the job. There's no charge to request a quote through this site.
Which areas do you cover?
We connect customers throughout Kamloops, including Sahali, Aberdeen, Brocklehurst, the North Shore, Valleyview, Juniper Ridge, Westsyde, Dallas and Barnhartvale, and nearby communities such as Merritt, Logan Lake, Ashcroft, Cache Creek, Barriere, Clearwater and Sun Peaks. See our service areas.
